Do You Need a Car in Aruba?
We will be straight with you. Most visitors who stay on Palm or Eagle Beach do not need a car every day. Here is exactly when renting is worth it, when to skip it, and what it really costs. No upselling.
The Honest Answer
You do not need a car for your whole trip. You might want one for a day or two. Match it to how you actually plan to spend your days.
Skip the car if you mostly want to
- Stay on Palm Beach or Eagle Beach and walk to the sand
- Eat at restaurants near your hotel and in Oranjestad
- Do your big activities as booked tours with pickup included
- Keep things simple and relaxed, taxis and shuttles handle it
Rent a car (ideally for a day or two) if you want to
- Explore Arikok National Park and the Natural Pool yourself (need a 4x4)
- Chase the wild north coast and the lighthouse on your own time
- Reach quiet spots like Baby Beach and the south end
- Hop between beaches and local spots without waiting on a taxi
A common smart move is renting for just the two or three days you want to roam, and going car free the rest of the trip.

Fixed government rates, not metered. There is no Uber or Lyft. Agree the price before you get in. Carry some cash.
Arubus
The public bus runs between Oranjestad and the Palm and Eagle Beach hotel strip for a couple of dollars. Cheap and reliable in daylight hours.

Car Rental FAQ
Do I really need a car in Aruba?+
Not every day. If you are staying on Palm Beach or Eagle Beach and mostly want beach time, dinners, and a few booked tours, taxis and hotel shuttles cover you fine. Rent a car for the specific days you want to explore Arikok National Park, the Natural Pool, the north coast, or Baby Beach on your own schedule.
Is there Uber or Lyft in Aruba?+
No. Aruba has no Uber or Lyft. Getting around means taxis (fixed government rates, not metered, so agree the price before you ride), the Arubus public bus between Oranjestad and the hotel strip, hotel shuttles, or your own rental car.
Do I need a 4x4 or Jeep?+
Only if you plan to drive yourself into Arikok National Park, the Natural Pool, or the rough north coast, where the roads are unpaved and genuinely require high clearance and 4x4. For everything else (beaches, restaurants, Oranjestad, the lighthouse), a regular economy car is plenty.
How much does renting a car in Aruba cost?+
A small economy car typically runs about $40 to $60 a day, and a 4x4 or Jeep about $70 to $100 a day, before insurance. Prices climb in peak season (December to April), so booking ahead saves money and guarantees the category you want.
Can I drive on my home license?+
Yes. A valid driver license from the US, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, and most countries is accepted for tourists. You do not need an international permit. Drive on the right, and note that gas stations are limited outside town, so fill up before long drives.
Should I book at the airport or online in advance?+
Book online in advance. Airport and walk up counters sell out of the cheaper categories fast, especially in high season, and you lose the ability to compare. Comparing online lets you see all the companies and their real cancellation terms in one place.
